Ask Your Council to Create Moon Meadows

We need your help to save moths! Can you help us remind local authorities of the difference they can make for moths? Use our template to ask your council whether their Biodiversity Plan includes tackling the threat of light pollution to save moths.

Moths are important indicators of environmental health, but because they are active after dark, we often miss the warning signs they are sharing with us. In the last 50 years we have lost 33% of moths from the UK’s night skies, and with them, an essential part of nighttime ecosystems.

Alarming new research using Met Office data shows nocturnal insects decline most sharply in areas with high artificial light at night. But did you know that lighting can be missing from local biodiversity plans, and out of the control of biodiversity teams?

Local authorities, as caretakers of our environment, can help moths by creating Moon Meadows, green spaces free from light pollution. This doesn’t mean turning lights off, but adjusting them to nature-friendly alternatives to protect people and wildlife. By all of us making changes, we can save moths together.
